Earthquake Relief Fundraising Events

The events listed below have been arranged by volunteers, associations, companies, etc. across the country to try to help victims of the March 11th tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Some of these events are non-IJA events. The details provided are for your information only. If you would like to know more about any of the events, please contact the events organisers for more details.

Aid Japan for Children
The hope in a child’s smile
Celtic –Japan Tsunami Relief

Type of Event: Charity Concert of Traditional Irish and Japanese Music
• This concert will be video recorded and streamed online.
• A new piece for this concert has been composed by Martin Tourish. A visual is being prepared for this by a Japanese media company, and this will become available on YouTube in the coming days.

Objectives:
• To raise awareness of the plight of children in Japan amongst people in Ireland.
• To communicate the efforts being made in Japan to address these issues.
• To encourage people in Japan by letting them know they are not forgotten.
• All profits from the concert go to assist charities in Japan. In the case of this event, they will go to assist the Midori no Tohoku Genki Programme.

Venue: St Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, Dublin 2
Date and Time: Thursday, 24th November 2011 at 8pm. Event commences at 8pm. Doors open at 7:30pm. Early arrival advised.

Artists:
Paddy Moloney (Tin Whistle, Uilleann Pipes) - Mus. D. HC., composer, leader and founding member of The Chieftains.
Ellen Cranitch - Presenter of Grace Notes on RTE lyric fm.
Tim Edey (Guitar) - From Broadstairs, Kent. Tim plays guitar with the Sharon Shannon band and often with Kerry Irish music legend Seamus Begley. He has toured every country in Europe with German based dance troupe Magic of the dance with world champion dancer Michael Donnellan.
Kevin Conneff (Vocal, Bodhran) - Member of the Chieftains. Released solo album 'The Week Before Easter' in 1988.
Ályth McCormack (Vocal) - Singer from the Island of Lewis in the Hebrides off Scotland. Her voice is described as having ‘spun glass fragility belying a sinewy strength’. Ályth has regularly toured with the Chieftains since 2008. She recently formed a duo with Tríona Marshall.
Seán Keane (Fiddle) - Member of the Chieftains. He has recorded 'Seán Keane' and a duet album with fellow Chieftain Matt Molloy, 'Contentment is Wealth'. He also recorded with Mick Moloney and his brother, James Keane on the album 'Reel Away the Real World' in 1980.
Tríona Marshall - Harpist from Portlaoise. Regularly performs with the Chieftains. Tríona recently formed a duo with Ályth McCormack.
Martin Tourish - Accordionist and composer from Donegal. Won TG4's 'Young Musician of the Year' award. Involved with many types of music, including Balkan, Klezmer, Rock, the music of Astor Piazzolla, and has shared the stage with acts as diverse as Altan, The Cafe Orchestra and Patti Smith, recorded with National Symphony Orchestra.
Frances Marshall (Vocal) - Classically trained Soprano studying at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with Sylvia O’Regan. Winner of the Thomas Moore Cup in Feis Ceoil 2011 and prize-winner in the Percy Whitehead Cup and Soprano Cup.
Charles Marshall (Satsuma biwa, Shakuhachi) - From Portlaoise. Organist and Director of Music at St Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, Dublin. Lived in Japan from 1994 to 2008 where he studied Shakuhachi (Bamboo flute) and Satsuma biwa (Lute developed by the samurai of southern Japan).

JAPANESE EARTHQUAKE BENEFIT DINNER

With the public’s attention shifting to other stories in the media, now is a critical time to bring awareness to the ongoing relief efforts in Japan following the recent earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis.

To assist in Japan’s recovery, Thornton’s Restaurant is hosting a special night featuring an inspired menu crafted by Kevin Thornton to include paired wines generously donated by some of their most loyal wine suppliers.

The evening will feature a secret item up for silent auction where the bidder who offers the most support will be awarded the ultimate epicurean prize.

A representative from the Japanese Embassy of Ireland will be in attendance and the beneficiary of the profits from the evening is the Japanese Red Cross.

Photo Exhibition "The Power of Mother Nature - Earthquake & Tsunami in Japan, March 2011"

Event Details: Presented currently in Deansgrange Library, you have a rare and unusual opportunity to see a photographic chronicle of the effect of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan earlier this year. All the photos on display were taken personally by Mr. Rokuro Miyake, a retired secondary school headmaster from Yokohama, Japan, who volunteered to foster some orphaned students after the big disaster.

The Red Dot Project

Event Details: St Michael’s Secondary School in Finglas, Dublin have formed The Red Dot Project in order to raise money for Japan. They intend to send the money we earn to the Ireland Japan association for their earthquake appeal fund. This money is then sent to the Japanese Red Cross society, who distributes it as cash grants to the people who need it while they are waiting for a more permanent solution to their problems. Their project involves them selling recycled plastic pencils which not only benefits Japan but also benefits the environment! If you would like to know more about our project or purchase a pencil for €1 in aid of Japan please contact them.

Event Details: Cultural demonstrations will include: Origami (paper-folding), music, Japanese calligraphy, instructions and a demonstration on how to use Furoshiki (wrapping cloth) and Tai Chi. There will also be a bazaar with lots of Japanese items for sale, a raffle and a silent auction (Japanese Kimono, OBI long sash/belt and crafts, etc.) plus Shiatsu by professional masseuses. There will be free tea and coffee on the day and all proceeds will go directly to the earthquake-stricken Tohoku area.
