Classic and Contemporary NOH Theatre

Date:

5 December 2009

Details:

Dating back seven centuries, Noh is a classical Japanese performance form combining elements of song, dance, drama, poetry and music. Featuring elaborate costumes and masks, it is a highly aesthetic stage art. The Oshima Noh Theatre of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, and Theatre Nohgaku, based in Tokyo and New York, will collaborate in a joint production of classical and contemporary not theatre.

This is a rare opportunity to catch a performance of Japanese Noh theatre, in a unique production featuring the classical warrior play KIYOTSUNE and the World Premiere of PAGODA, a new English-language Noh play that deals poetically with the emotional nuances of migration, identity and longing.

This RARE performance was last seen in London 19 years ago and almost SOLD OUT for its London dates. We highly recommend you book your tickets as soon as possible. This is a small theatre with limited seats available. Seats are not allocated (first come first serve) so early arrival on the night is also recommended to secure good seats. All IJA members will be invited to a special reception on the evening of December 4th in collaboration with the Japanese Embassy. If you are interested in becoming an IJA member, you can apply online.

  • Location: Samuel Beckett Theatre at Trinity College Dublin

A Lecture-Demonstration on Noh Theatre for Irish Theatre Students and professionals will take place at 2pm on December 5th.
